In this article I’m getting a collection of membership prices I can find across different gyms in Canada, costs of training gear and other expenses you will incur if you are training BJJ.
How much is a monthly BJJ membership?
Like everything, it depends. The main factors are location, how many classes are offered, who the instructor is, which team the gym is affiliated with are all factors in the price of a BJJ gym membership. I collected a few different prices for some gyms across Canada.
Side note: Does anyone else find it annoying when a gym does not list membership prices on their website?

Nova Scotia - $70-175/month
PEI - $90-$120/month
New Brunswick - $80-100/month

Feedback from the BJJ community
I posted a question on my Instagram page (@PresleyBJJ) where I gathered some of my information. There’s a few notes I’ll share with you.

“Victoria, $150 a month with a 12 month commitment.”
“Vancouver I paid $150 a month in 2019. Toronto $200/month or $30-$50 drop in fee.”

“Price is based off of base cost to just keep club open.”

“Marcelo Garcia’s in New York is $400 a month…”
“New Jersey - Yesterday, I signed up for a 2 year unlimited deal for just under $2500”.
How much is a BJJ tournament?
Most BJJ tournaments are now on Smoothcomp.com you can find the registration prices on each tournament page. Obviously this only covers the fee to compete in the tournament and does not cover travel fees (gas, hotel, food) which can be a lot more than the registration fees. Here’s a few examples I found…
$50 Guillotine Productions. Adults. (Truro, Nova Scotia)
$65 East Coast Grappling. Adults. (Dieppe, New Brunswick)
$60 East Coast Grappling. Kids. (Dieppe, New Brunswick)
$80 Rogue Grappling. Adults. (Moncton, New Brunswick)

$133 USD = 187 CAD
$175 USD = 245 CAD
How much is training gear?
Keep in mind all of these prices are without taxes and shipping. I always found ordering any training gear online usually was not worth it because the taxes and shipping could be more than the price of the gear you ordered.

The more obsessed you become with BJJ the more that you will want to train and the less you will want to do other things that are not BJJ. Compared to other sports like hockey and football, BJJ is a fairly low cost sport. You don’t need a lot of equipment to get started.
